The Story Behind the Numbers

Recently, the American Bar Association, in cooperation with Patrick Krill of Krill Strategies, completed one of the most complete studies of attorney well-being since 2016. And while this study spit out a bunch of concerning numbers, it is even more important to understand the picture behind the numbers.

First, the numbers tell us that legal professionals are still struggling with their mental health, and too often that struggle takes place in the dark. One of the most striking numbers was that 47.4% of lawyers experienced symptoms of burnout. When nearly half of the attorneys surveyed report a problem, it is clear that more has to be done. This is particularly true when you factor in that nearly 1 in 5 lawyers reported signs of depression and anxiety.

The numbers tell us a story not just of a profession in trouble, but also one disconnected from possible solutions. 53.3% of respondents reported concerns about confidentiality as a barrier to care, while 49.2% of respondents reported career concerns as possible barriers. So not only are people struggling, but far too many of them aren’t getting the help they need.

Yet the study finishes on a positive note. It reports that 81% of respondents thought that more could be done within the profession. We agree; in fact, it is why we exist. Legal professionals are more than just cogs in the wheels of justice; they are people. Taking care of the people helps us take care of the profession. We believe that all attorneys should be able to get quality support for their mental health and well-being without living in fear that it will somehow tank their career.

Everyone has a story. The legal profession has its own story, one made up of many smaller parts. The numbers reveal a story of a profession in trouble because its individuals are struggling. We know that story all too well. We’ve lived it. And we’re here to help.
