Closed Governments and Partisan Fighting
We are currently in the middle of a government shutdown. Both parties are blaming each other, however, we aren’t here to assign blame or even talk about the politics behind the shut down. We do not care who you think caused the shutdown. We want to talk about the fact that for many (and not just federal legal professionals) this shutdown and the partisan fighting behind it is causing stress and anxiety, which could be exacerbating your mental health.
First, as we’ve said before, if this current political environment is causing stress and anxiety, know that it is okay to turn off the news, turn off social media, and ground yourself with people, places, or activities that help recharge you and strengthen you mental health. Know also that support for your stressors is available.
Among the support that is available is the 988 Crisis and Suicide Prevention Helpline. This services is considered essential, and it remains open during the shutdown. Also, private support like our peer services are available. So however you prefer to get your support, know that there are options.
Secondly, if you are a federal employee who has been furloughed, know that this shutdown doesn’t reflect upon you, your performance, or your value. While it is absolutely understandable that this might make you feel more anxious and more out of control, these are things that are outside of your control. Like we said, this isn't a reflection on you.
Lastly, know that this will pass. America has experience periods of division, rupture, and repair before. We have the experience and the tools to come back from this and there is no reason to believe we won’t find our way back. In the meantime, as we said above know there are steps you can take to protect your mental health from closed governments and partisan fighting. And until next time, we hope you take those steps to practice wellness.
